Advice & Support

The Students' Union Advice Service provides free, confidential, independent and non-judgemental support to students who need help understanding University processes, resolving problems, or making informed decisions about their options.

What we do.

The Advice Service offers information, guidance and advocacy across a range of student issues, including:

  • Explain relevant University policies and procedures in plain language.
  • Help students understand correspondence from the University.
  • Support students in preparing statements, evidence and documentation.
  • Discuss potential outcomes and next steps.
  • Assist students in preparing for meetings and hearings.
  • Provide guidance on appeals and review processes.
  • Signpost students to specialist support services where appropriate.

Unsure whether we can help? Get in touch.

We'd rather hear from you early and help you find the right support than have you face a difficult situation alone.

If you’d like to get in touch with a member of the Union’s Advice team, please email advice.union@stir.ac.uk or call 01786 467166

Get support.

The Advice Service offers information, guidance and advocacy across a range of student issues.

The Advice Service is committed to being:

Independent

We work separately from the University and provide advice based on the interests and needs of the student.

Confidential

Information shared with us will not be disclosed without permission, except where there is a legal or safeguarding obligation to do so.

Impartial and non-judgemental

We support students regardless of the issue they are experiencing and treat every student with dignity and respect.

Accessible

We strive to ensure that all students can access advice and support, regardless of their background, circumstances or mode of study.

What We Cannot Do.

While we can provide guidance and support, we cannot:

  • Change University decisions.
  • Guarantee specific outcomes.
  • Provide legal representation.
  • Act as a decision-maker in University procedures.
  • Submit documents or make decisions on behalf of students without their consent.

Feeling overwhelmed?

We recognise that University procedures can sometimes feel complicated or overwhelming, particularly when students are facing challenges that may affect their studies, wellbeing, finances, or overall student experience.

Our role is to ensure that students have access to clear information, practical guidance, and support throughout these processes.
