Want to start a new society? We try to keep it as simple as possible, so everything you need is included in our Society Starter Pack. Alternatively, you may wish to adopt a society that previously existed.

Society starter pack.

A society in the University of Stirling Students’ Union is a group of 3 or more University of Stirling students with a shared interest, hobby or goal.
Societies are run by the University of Stirling Students’ Union and are therefore separate but connected to the University.
Any group of current students at the University of Stirling can set up a society with the Students’ Union. You do not need to have experience running a group before, just an idea and passion to make it happen.
The starter pack includes a template constitution, a financial plan, and much more.

What makes a society.

Society Constitution

This is a document which explains the aims of the society and what the committee positions are. Once submitted, it awaits approval by the Societies Executive Committee (SEC) who are a group of elected students.

All societies are expected to use the template constitution included in the Society Starter Pack. You'll edit the highlighted parts, including the society name, aims, and committee positions.

Please submit your Starter Pack (which includes your proposed constitution) to the Societies Executive Committee by one of the following deadlines*:

*Deadlines are typically the Sunday after Societies Forum (fka Communities Zone) meetings. The SEC then meets on the following Thursday. These deadlines are tentative and subject to change.

Memberships

All societies require 3 paid core members (President, Secretary, and Treasurer) to affiliate with the Students' Union.

There is a "grace period" of one full semester for new groups to establish themselves. This means paying for a SU Societies Membership and the set fee for the society itself. Memberships can be bought online through the society's webpage.

Society committee

The society committee is a group of students tasked with running the group. All society committees must be elected democratically by current members at an Annual General Meeting, or an Emergency General Meeting if a post becomes open.

The President, Secretary and Treasurer are mandatory positions and will appear on the academic transcript upon graduation.

Any additional committee roles must be voted in by the current membership and sent to the VP Communities for approval prior to being officially elected. All other committee roles are optional and, as of now, will not appear on academic transcripts.

Adopt a society.

Do you want to help run a society, but can’t think of an idea for a new one? Look no further! Consider ‘adopting’ one of our dormant societies that didn’t have enough committee members to continue.

This process is about reviving these groups that didn’t quite make it, and helping them thrive once more!

Amnesty International: Human rights organisation which campaigns against injustice and inequality everywhere
Analytica: Aims to promote/support/encourage students of the University of Stirling to adapt/enhance the analytical approach in their relevant studies and professional life
Asia Scotland Business Club: Aims to promote the events that the Asia Scotland Institute organises throughout the semester, To organise ASI events at the University, To promote a greater understanding of Asia through the sharing of knowledge
Bridge: Meet on a weekly basis to play bridge as a group, Actively promote the advantages of playing bridge i.e. increased positive cognition, social and quality of life outcomes, Participate in community bridge events in Stirling
British Red Cross: Promote Red Cross values within the University, and raising awareness of ongoing humanitarian crises across the world
Comic & SciFi: Aims to stimulate the appreciations of and creation of illustrated literature throughout the University
Conservative: Aims to stimulate amongst students greater interest in, and understanding of the Conservative Party and Conservative principles
Cooperative Society: Aims to encourage the establishment of student owned co-operative ventures
Coppafeel Uniboob: Aims to promote breast cancer awareness amongst all students at the University and the wider community of Stirling via face-to-face interaction and social media outlets
Craft Beer: Aims to educate members about the production process of different types of craft beer and its cultural and historical significance
European Law (ELSA): Aims to contribute to legal education in an international context, to foster mutual understanding and to promote social responsibility for the law students at the University of Stirling
Events & Networking: Aims to help its members become aware of the importance of a wide network with people of different interests and skills
First Aid Africa: Aims to facilitate participation in the work of the charity First Aid Africa by means of regular meetings, functions, training and other activities

Wine Club: Aims to enlighten and educate students about different varieties of wine

Yoga: Aims to gather yoga lovers, and share and discuss teachings

Adoption process

Choose a society from the current list of dormant clubs.
Find a president, secretary and treasurer. (If you can’t find all three positions, still fill out this form and select ‘no’ when asked if you have a committee prepared, and we’ll let you know if anyone else expresses interest in the society.)
Email societies.union@stir.ac.uk to register your interest
Meet with Activities & Volunteer Coordinator & VP Communities to discuss what running a society entails, and read our society handbook.
We will contact you with the society's constitution so that you can amend this if necessary.
Submit your revival plan - this will be emailed to you upon completion of the Adopt a Society application
