Student discipline

Ordinance 2 is the University of Stirling's Code of Student Discipline.

It explains the standards of behaviour expected from students, what happens if those standards are not met, and the processes the University follows when dealing with disciplinary matters.    

The Code is designed to help create a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment where all students can study, work, and socialise.

Students are expected to treat others with respect and follow University policies and regulations.  

The Code applies to all University of Stirling students. It can cover behaviour: 

• On campus 
• In University accommodation 
• During University activities and placements 
• Online, where behaviour affects members of the University community 
• In situations where a student's actions may impact the University's reputation or community 

Examples include 

• Harassment, bullying, or discrimination 
• Threatening, abusive, or violent behaviour 
• Damage to property 
• Theft or fraud 
• Misuse of University facilities or IT systems 
• Disruptive behaviour affecting teaching, research, or University activities 
• Failure to follow reasonable instructions from University staff  
   

The University categorises concerns into different levels depending on their seriousness. Less serious matters may be handled locally, while more serious allegations can be referred to a formal investigation and disciplinary hearing.  

Students will normally: 

• Be informed of the concern or allegation. 
• Be given an opportunity to respond. 
• Take part in an investigation if required. 
• Receive a decision and explanation of any outcome.  

If you are involved in a disciplinary process, you have the right to: 

• Know what allegation has been made. 
• Respond to the information presented. 
• Provide evidence and relevant information. 
• Be accompanied or supported where permitted. 
• Appeal a disciplinary decision through the University's appeal process.  
   

Depending on the seriousness of the case, outcomes may include:

• Advice or a warning 
• Requirements to change behaviour 
• Restrictions on access to certain facilities or activities 
• Fines or compensation for damage 
• Suspension from the University 
• Expulsion in the most serious cases

The University may still investigate and take action under Ordinance 2 even when a matter is being considered by the police or courts, although it may adjust its process depending on the circumstances.
