Language Exchange Society

Who we are

The Language Exchange Society brings language learners from all nationalities together at the University of Stirling. We encourage you to attend our free face-to-face and online events organised by students who share their native language. Help us build an inclusive and enthusiastic language learning community! Students, members of staff and local community welcome.

History
In spring 2021, the Language Exchange Society (LES) was founded to provide students the opportunity to learn and practice a new language outside their degree programme, in view of the lack of evening language courses at uni. We created a Microsoft Teams page that is accessible to all students, members of staff and the local community. Since then, we have grown our team, moved to in-person events and at the Clubs & Societies Awards 2022 we won the Best Publicity and the Club of Culture awards, and received an honourable mention for both Club of the Year and Biggest Contribution to the Student Body. Thanks to our members, in 2023 we received the Club of the Year award, and Most Innovative Idea award for a society collaboration. We couldn't be happier!

Our team
Our committee is mostly made up of international students. If you want to contribute to the society and share your language, email us at stir.languageexchange@gmail.com. If you want to become a member with voting rights in the Language Exchange Society, purchase your membership for £5 through the Students Union website.

Free BSL classes - updated spring 2023
With the support of the Vice Chancellor's Fund, we have offered a British Sign Language (BSL) and Deaf Awareness course during the 2 semesters: autumn 2022 and spring 2023, free and open to staff, students and members of the local community.

In spring 2023 we are back with a Deaf Awareness session on Tuesday 7th February 2023 (no signup needed). Lessons will take place every Tuesday evening after that (sign up needed) as a Level 2 course and a beginners course. We have reached maximum capacity for Beginner and Level Two BSL courses for spring 2023.
