The University of Stirling's official LGBTQIA+ Society! Dedicated to providing a social and support network for all LGBTQ+ students at the University.
Welcome to the official University of Stirling LGBTQ+ Society webpage!
Note: Everyone (barring TERFS, SWERFS & Bigots) is welcome to join and come along!
This new academic year marks a soft rebrand for us here at the LGBTQ+ Society. The society has always been a safe space for LGBTQ+ students and allies to meet, socialise and find community, but we want to expand on what the society can be. Alongside the social side of society, we’re introducing a stronger political focus. Being LGBTQ+, or even an ally, in Scotland/The UK is a politicised societal position, and we feel we should recognise that.
We want to create a welcoming, accessible space where individuals can discuss/engage with these issues whilst also supporting one another and having fun.
We aim to meet twice a week: one meeting will be socially orientated (i.e., social events, movie nights, etc.) & one will be political/activism orientated (i.e., discussions, campaigns, etc.). There is no obligation to attend both meetings – come to whatever interests you, come to both, or drop in whenever you want :)
During social meetings, our events will continue as normal, emphasising: meeting new people; making new friends & enjoying ourselves. Activities may include: craft nights, collaborations with other societies, games/casual gatherings, & nights-outs. All social events during regular meetings will be funded by the society, and we will also have extracurricular activities outside these meetings at our own costs.
During political meetings, we aim to provide a space to discuss, learn and campaign around issues affecting LGBTQ+ people. We have plans for weekly political discussions, biweekly campaign meetings & a monthly queer reading group/zine-making session. Additionally, we aim to be in solidarity with other groups and aim to attend relevant protests/events. You don’t need to have extensive political knowledge/experience to attend; whether you want to contribute, learn something/just listen, you are welcome to come along!
Some activities will be shared by both ends of society; for example, educational activities may be political or purely for entertainment. Once a semester, the society as a whole will work together to organise a queer fundraiser surrounding an issue that matters to them. For example, we typically organise and participate in a vigil for Trans Remembrance Day every November.
Of course, these are just our ideas – we welcome suggestions from our members, too!
As you might already know, joining other societies here at Stirling costs a little bit of money, but we are actually FREE to join! You will, however, need to pay for your SU Societies Membership, which covers you for the entire academic year and allows you to join any of the societies you want.
We hope to see you!
