"More than 135 nationalities represented on campus" is what we're told on the university website. But can you really see this representation?
Have you met people from 100 nationalities or learned about the cultures and traditions of even 50?
Those students from 135 nationalities lack the respresentation they deserve, lack the space to share their culture, lack the places to practice their tradition and lack someone to voice their issues.
Lunar New Year is a tradition celebrated across Asia. Howver a sign that is only written in Mandarin is NOT an inclusive celebration and exludes the students from over 10 countries.
The only space for a cultural exchange at the University being the few societies run by students does NOT create a diverse campus life...
Being one of the only BIPOC Sports Union Club presidents is NOT an inclusive leadership in sports provided at the University...
WE DESERVE BETTER!
I CAN REPRESENT YOU BETTER!
For many this is a great opportunity to enhance their CV, for me this is PERSONAL!
I've lived 4 years in Stirling feeling lonely and unwelcome, laughing off casual racism and ignorance on and off campus. But, I'm ready to speak up now and create the platform me and other Internaional students so desperately needed to share our experiences and demand a better treatment.
What do I personally want to achive?
- A Culture Festival as big as the Fresher's Fayre
- A physical or online space dedicated to bringing awareness to social issues surrounding International Students in Stirling
- A Student's Union organised Diverse Cultural Celebrations, where we ask YOU to educate us on YOUR traditions and values
- Demand the Sports Union to actively pursue diversity within clubs and club committee, and consider positions of international students as they integrate to a new sporting governance and system
- Educate all club and society committees on the importance of Equality Diversity and Inclusion and the importance of celebrating and engaging with different cultures of all members
This is not to say I'm only interested in accomplishing what I personally want, but rather to show you why I want this role in the first place. If elected my first priority would be to HEAR & LISTEN to what you as an International Student need in order to create a home in Stirling.
About me:
At University, I study undergrad Business Law. I'm currently the president of the Pole Fitness Club and coaching Stirling's Quadball Team (sport formerly known as quidditch).
Outside of univeristy, I play for the Scottish National Quadball Team and I'm also the co-chair for the Equality Diversity and Inclusion Committee of the governing body of Quadball in the UK. I occasionally organise MUN Conferences (LIMUN, ScotMUN, LeedsMUN...) as that's where my love for debate and proactiveness was first born.
I have the passion and burning desire needed to stay focused and energetic all year in this role. I have the experience required to be diplomatic and bring plans to fruition.
