Union Statement:
In light of recent Racist and Islamophobic violence across the UK, the Stirling Students’ Union stand firmly against such actions and are committed to supporting our students. Scotland’s Universities and Colleges welcome students from all over the world and reject all forms of racism, discrimination, Islamophobia and violence.
We want to be clear: these have not been protests. These were violent riots and domestic extremism that stemmed from structural racism and neo-fascism. This violence is not a case of isolated incidents but part of a dangerous narrative trying to normalise racism and anti-migrant sentiments.
Migrants, racialised, and Muslim students are always welcome in our communities and a vital part of our Student Movement. The student movement has been and will continue to focus on actively working towards dismantling systemic racism and fostering an environment of equality and understanding. We stand in solidarity with those affected by the far-right riots recently and those who are being subject to some of the most horrendous abuse we have seen. Racism and Islamophobia have no place in our community.
If any of our students are worried, anxious, or scared about what they see, we want to reassure you that we are here for you. You should contact Stirling Students’ Union or the University support services directly.
