Thank you to everyone that joined us for Global Climate Change Week! From mushroom foraging in Aberfoyle to making your own botanical cosmetics; from discussing sustainable food systems in Scotland to collecting 34kg of litter from Gowan Hill; from carving quite a few nice wooden spoons to discussing getting institutions to back a cleaner future by removing investments in fossil fuels – it’s been busy but all this wouldn’t have happened without you!
So what happens next? Watch this space, we have big dreams.
The Union will continue discussions with the University with the ambition for its investment portfolio to be fossil-fuel free, helping support the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the needed transition to a low-carbon economy.
We’re also pushing ahead to try get more bike spaces on campus. When external funding opportunities become available we will work with the University to ensure funding bids are placed. Thank you to the amazing 400+ of you that filled in the recent cycling survey! The evidence you’ve provided will go directly into a £25,000 bid for over 100 new sheltered bike spaces – we have our fingers crossed!
INTERHALL ENERGY COMPETITION
Please help support our Interhall Energy Competition by reducing your energy use in campus accommodation. The hall with the largest energy reduction will win £500 for a community fund each semester – so if you need that pool table surface refitting, or maybe think there’s a nice place for a picnic table come spring, be in it with a chance to win! Easy ways you can help reduce your energy use are:
- Switching off lights when you leave the room and laptop/phone chargers when they’re not in use
- Leaving for the day? Turn down your heating – even from high to low makes a big difference!
- Using the oven? Ask if anyone else wants to pop their dinner in at the same time
- Try the 2-song shower challenge – this can save a load of energy and water and you’ll still be sparkling at the end! Choice of shower karaoke songs completely up to you.
After you collected 120 Mooncups in just 2 days, we’re working with the University to try get more funding for another delivery for January. Can’t wait until then or a friend (non-student) wants one? Drop by the Green and Blue Space and you can order one the cost price of £15.27.
