Following the passing of the Help Not Harm Motion in February 2022, the University of Stirling Students' Union has committed to taking a harm reduction approach to drugs and alcohol. A harm reduction stance does not mean anti-social or criminal behaviour is acceptable. Any such misconduct will continue to be addressed through the Code of Student Discipline.
Substance use is not to be regarded the same as involvement in the supply of illegal drugs. Any student found to be involved in this may still be subject to the consideration of criminal prosecution.
In an effort to look after the best interests of our student body and eradicate barriers to support, this organisation will commit to providing students with relevant, accurate, and useful information. While Stirling Students' Union recognises the increased risk alcohol and other drugs have on physical and mental health, we also understand that a zero-tolerance stance can be harmful in that it may prevent students from seeking help in fear of facing punishment.
What is Harm Reduction?
Harm reduction is a practical response to drug-taking which aims to reduce the potential health risks of drugs for people who choose to take them. It is not an endorsement or condemnation of drug-taking, but a health-based response which challenges the stigma and worries around accessing support.
Our Service
We also offer drug testing kits which students may take for free from the main Union reception office. If you are struggling with the use of drugs, you may reach out to Union staff without fear of sanctions. A harm reduction stance does not mean anti-social or criminal behaviour is acceptable.
