Chloe Whyte for Student President

As a student with a background of over 3 years in youth politics, with organisations such as the Scottish Youth Parliament, Inclusion Scotland and ALYVE UK, I feel it's time to focus my efforts on the university I'm proud to call home.

I'm a Psychology student, known to linger around societies such as LGBT+ or Rock & Metal, and proud co-founder of DSAS, Scotland's largest university group for disabled students. I'm passionate about providing a voice to the voiceless, and so if elected, my priorities would be:

Mental Wellbeing

  • It’s no secret that Stirling students struggle disproportionately more with their mental health compared to other Scottish universities. This has to change, and I feel a more radical approach through supporting SMHAC and lobbying for Scottish Mental Health First Aid for all accommodation staff could have an impact.

Life on Campus

  • The possible introduction of a microwave into the atrium, and more water fountains throughout Cottrell and Pathfoot would enable students to cut down on single-use plastic, and save more money.
  • The action carried out by the Litter Pick team has been incredible in improving the wonderful views around our campus, but if elected, I would seek to further this by introducing ‘ballot bins’ for cigarettes around Campus Central.

Housing

  • Support the SSTU, Co-operative Society and the Housing Officer to ensure that students – particularly in off-campus accommodation – are guaranteed better value for money.

Transport

  • Many students have been left disproportionately affected by the rising cost – and rising unreliability – of First Buses. I would like to continue a fair, calculated negotiation with their representatives to secure the best deal for Stirling students.

Inclusion for All

  • Last year, a group of students carried out an Accessibility Audit of the main campus buildings. If elected, I would seek to turn this audit into action, and tackle the inaccessibility that prevents many disabled students from fully engaging with life on campus.
  • Furthermore, to support LGBT+ students who wish to take part in sport, I will look into the possibility of Trans & Non-Binary Swim Sessions with the Sports President.
  • Last year saw some brilliant campaigns to further the liberation of BAME groups, and I would seek to work closely with the BAME Officer and International Students Officer to build on this.

Democracy on Campus

  • As our constitutional review is being carried out this year, it is important we elect a President who will take a fair approach to ensure that our constitution only seeks to better life for students at Stirling through a democratised Student Union.
  • Furthermore, we’re proud to have a wide range of part-time officers who devote time out of their studies to improving life at Stirling. Because of the serious impact that work can have on university, I would look into the possibility of a part-time officer role for Working Students.
  • Lastly, I would guarantee that all General Meetings, including AGMs and EGMs, are advertised widely through a range of different channels.
