Deery For Democracy

My name is Daniel Deery. As a second year Economics and Politics student, I’m running to represent you at the National Union of Students. I am currently the Chair of the Labour Society and have served on various committees including the Stirling Debating Society and was a founding member of the Stirling Cooperative Society. I have spent my time in the Union fighting for students rights in University and in the work place, regarding topics from housing to mental health and wellbeing. I want to continue that fight at a national level. Stirling students need strong representation and I believe that I can be that strong voice whilst delivering on these key promises.

1. Democracy

Throughout my time at the University of Stirling I have been a passionate fighter for democracy and accountability within our Student Union. It is my belief that by strengthening our democracy, we strengthen our voice as students. For that reason, I will support One Member One Vote for NUS meaning the people who represent all of us at a National Level will be decided by every student not just a few chosen detached from what we go through on a day to day basis. I want to represent you in every way I can. I promise to make your priorities my priority and fight for every student no matter what.

2. Mental Health

There is an epidemic of mental health issues on campuses across the country and we are not getting the support that too many of us need. Having witness many of my close friends suffer and from being affected by this issue directly myself. I will fight to ensure that adequate mental health provisions are a priority for the NUS in order to ensure all students can complete their studies

3. Workers Rights

I am a passionate supporter of everyone having a fair wage and a safe workplace. As a result of this I have been involved in organising directly to support this both within campus and outside, having worked with out local Unite hospitality group. I want to see an NUS that will work to end the exploitation of student workers opposing zero hours contracts and supporting a full living wage and support for our trade unions.

4. Minority Rights

As a member of the LGBT+ community I know what its like to feel excluded and ignored. An experience all too familiar for students from minority backgrounds such as BAME, the LGBT+ community and those with disabilities as well as students not from this country. It is for this reason I will fight to defend the interest of minority groups, support and defend policies designed to help these students including defending the No-Platform, fighting for trans rights and pushing for measures that ensure that university and student unions are accessible for everyone. Too often students from minority backgrounds are ignored and I want to help ensure that all voices are heard and foster inclusion for all.
