Support and Expand

Who am I?

My name is Heather Marr and I am currently a third year History student (although admittedly in Canada on exchange right now). Since my first year I’ve been heavily involved in clubs and socs, even being elected as a committee member within my first semester, and since then holding positions as secretary and president. Additionally I have been on the Communities Zone Executive Committee, working closely with the Student’s Union, and so have some familiarity with the Union.

Why am I running?

So far my time at university has been a fantastic one, but sadly it cannot be attributed all to lectures. It’s come from clubs and socs. Most of my friends have been made through joining and participating in clubs and socs and in my involvement in the Union. I’ve had such a positive experience, and I want to help insure that this is the case for all students at Stirling. I just want everyone to have a good time.

What is it I want to do?

My main aim is to Support and Expand clubs and socs.

  1. Support committees by offering a monthly drop-in service. Either individually or as a group committee members would have the chance to talk with me directly over any issues they are currently dealing within the society. This time would be used for problem solving, or to check over any applications, or whatever else the society needs help with, but primarily it would be to support the committees further.
  2. Support societies in exploring roots for financial backing. I would head workshops aimed at generating fundraising ideas, helping with application writing, and looking at alternative sponsors, all to help increase the money societies have available to them. It is my belief that if we work together and generate bigger and better events more people will become involved in clubs and socs. And the better that is for every member.
  3. Expand on our clubs and societies. We have a colourful selection of clubs and socs on campus, but there is room for more. I want to make a positive environment for new clubs and socs to come into, I want help in publicising their presence on campus, highlighting what each one has to offer. But I also want to make a push for academic clubs and socs. They can be so beneficial, as is shown with Psychology Society and the Politics Society, and I want to encourage a relationship between them and their respective departments.
  4. Expand our clubs and socs to all of our campuses. We have three campuses at the university and I want to work towards bringing the three together through clubs and socs. This would help with any transitions from Forth Valley, but it would also make Stirling University a more cohesive university.
