Last week the University Of Stirling Students’ Union was awarded “Excellent” score as part of NUS’s Green Impact programme.
The Green Impact awards recognise the commitment students’ unions across the UK have made to create positive change and equipping the student body with the skills they need to work towards a more just and sustainable future. Some of the highlights of the past year include:

  • Reopened the Green and Blue Space, the Students' Union zero waste, recycling & sustainability hub, creating a space for students and staff to run workshops and have access to minimal packaging food, household products and secondhand homeware.
  • Collected 500 kg of food that was sent to the local foodbank.
  • Collected 2,000 kilos of general homeware, kitchenware, and clothing from leaving students. This will be sorted and what can't be repurposed will be recycled while everything else will be offered in the Green & Blue Space shop to incoming students to reduce their reliance on purchasing new products and to create a circular economy on campus.
  • Worked with local partners TCV to plant 270 Scottish native trees in the nearby Inzievar Woods, a number of which were grown by University of Stirling Students' Union members in our small tree nursery.
  • Continued to offer students weekly community free garden sessions, some of which were conducted with partner organizations to create educational workshops. The garden is a heaven for biodiversity and grows a range of organic produce.
  • Continued our work for Hedgehog Friendly Campus and have achieved our Silver Award and are working towards the Gold Award.
  • Introduced new sustainability policies, including one to offer a £0.10 discount on drinks when plant base milks were chosen over traditional dairy, new policy for paperless elections to minimize the printing, and a new policy to deter staff and students from purchasing products from Amazon for Union activities.
  • Ran a campaign around COP 26, to maximize community engagement and provide educational opportunities.
  • Supported student societies running a city-wide climate festival, partnering with organizations around the area including the Stirling Council, Zero Waste Scotland, Keep Scotland Beautiful, Transition Stirling, Recycke-a-Bike, On the Verge, and more. The festival was a mix of talks from experts and academics, litter picks across the city, fun workshops to take part in, and campaigns for behavior and policy change.
  • Ran a month-long trial with 30 students to determine if switching the Universities Period Poverty campaign over to a zero plastic, sustainably sourced products was viable, based on student preferences and ensuring product quality and comfort. This was successful and we are now in the process of fully transitioning to this eco-friendly brand as well as exploring offering more reusable products through the programme as well.

On behalf of the Students’ Union and our sustainability hub, the Green and Blue Space, we would like to say a huge thank you to all the student volunteers, students and staff that have been involved in our sustainability projects over the past year. Without your support we would not be able to work on this incredible range of activity and we look forward to another exciting year ahead.
