Making students' lives better is a key focus for the Students’ Union. Fundamental to this is providing students with safe and enjoyable venues to enjoy something to eat, drink and socialise. To ensure we keep to the highest possible standards in delivering for students, the Union has taken part in the national Best Bar None Awards for many years. Best Bar None is a national accreditation and award scheme for licensed premises. The Union proudly currently has gold standard accreditation which recognises good practice, safety, security and much more.
The whole Union team were thrilled to recently be confirmed as the winner of not one, but two national awards as part of the annual Best Bar None scheme. We have been recognised as the National Winner for Best Specialist Entertainment Venue as well as the Award for Social Responsibility and Innovation (the latter sponsored by Drinkaware). These awards take into account the training staff undertake, staff support for students through initiatives such as ‘Ask Angela’ and a customer focused approach which underpins all we provide.
Your Safety in Your Union
We want your Union to be a safe space for you to enjoy. If for any reason you don’t feel safe or something is of concern that you wish to report, please speak to a member of staff straight away, who are all there to help you.
Ask for Angela
Anyone who feels unsafe, vulnerable or threatened can discreetly seek help by approaching bar staff and asking them for 'Angela'. This code-phrase will indicate to staff that they require help with their situation and a trained member of staff will then look to support and assist them discreetly, including removing them from the situation safely.
Safe Taxi Scheme
In case of emergency and you find yourself without the necessary fare to take a taxi home, you can use the University of Stirling Safe Taxi Scheme.
Participating taxi firms will allow you to sign for the cost of your journey back to your student accommodation on production of your student card and in exceptional circumstances, you student ID number. To find out more about the scheme and the ts & cs, visit: www.stir.ac.uk/safetaxi or grab a card from the bar
The University of Stirling Safe Taxi Scheme was designed in consultation with the Students' Union, Police Scotland, Stirling Council and Stirling Taxi Association.
The Students’ Union works closely with the University and local authorities to ensure that your night out both here on campus and in Stirling and the surrounding area is as safe as possible.
Within the venues run by the Students’ Union, your safety is our top priority. As such, if there is anything you are concerned about (including if you are worried your drink has been spiked) please report this to a member of staff at the time so we can help support you. If you think a drink may have been spiked, we’ll be able to test it and give you the help and support you need. The Union also promotes the Ask for Angela and Safe Taxi scheme, have CCTV in operation in our outlets and spikeys for use in bottles as well as water being freely available. Anyone found to have been engaging in drink spiking will face disciplinary action and be reported to the police.
More information on spiking and staying safe, can be found on the University website.
