our impact

Your Students’ Union takes the environment seriously and, led by the Green and Blue Space and its volunteers, its impacts show this.

We are continuously looking at ways to improve sustainability on campus, promote biodiverse spaces and create learning opportunities for both students and staff.

Here are just several of our recent positive impacts:

  • Energy reduction: through staff behaviour change, over a four-year period we have reduced our office electricity needs by 19%.
  • Water reduction: by investing in new toilet facilities the SU has reduced its total water use by 40%.
  • Sustainable diets: the Venue now serves a vegetarian and vegan menu only, providing students with a wider choice of healthy meals and supporting your diet choices.
  • Food waste: after successfully campaigning for food waste collection in University accommodation there is now a food waste caddy in every kitchen. New caddies and bin liners can be requested for free through accommodation services.
  • Resource re-use: our Fair Share programme has recycled or reused over 41 tonnes of items since 2013 that would have otherwise been put in the waste skip. This has saved over 350 tonnes of CO2 being released in to the environment and generated £2,634 in 2015/2016 to support environmental projects.
  • Grow your own: last year our organic community garden harvested over 300kg of vegetables and fruit, without the use of inorganic fertilisers or pesticides.
  • Biodiversity: by planting pollinator-friendly plants in the community garden and orchard we are helping to support and improve biodiversity on campus.

We also acknowledge that many of our activities have the potential to cause significant damage to environment, both locally and globally. In order to address these we are currently compiling baseline data on our various activities to help determine current impacts and address how best we can reduce these impacts.
