INTRA MURAL SPORT
The Intramural sport programme at the University is focused upon providing students with the opportunity to participate in a number of sports in a friendly environment. The various tournaments and events held throughout the year are intended for students of all sporting abilities who simply want to get a bit more active, have fun and play on a regular basis. The following competitions take place throughout the year:
Intramural Football
The 6 a side football tournament runs Monday to Thursday for five weeks during the semester on the new sand dressed pitch. Teams, made up of friends, course mates and hall neighbours, play in a league each week on a night that suits best. As with all Intramural events, the focus is upon fun and enjoyment, with teams and players of all abilities playing. The winning team from each league wins a much coveted Intramural football medal, with a prize also going to the team with the most goals scored. Also a prize for the least successful team! Autumn 2006 will also see a female only league being introduced. If you are not so successful, remember, it’s the taking part that counts – and there is always semester 2!
Intramural Hockey
Semester one last year saw a very successful intramural hockey event run. This is played in the true spirit intramural events with the focus being on fun and socialising afterwards. The girl’s hockey club plan to be actively involved this year, so there are reasons to come along for the boys and the girls.
Intramural Golf
Five Intramural golf events are organised throughout the year and are open to all levels of golfers with an official club handicap. The first event, The University of Stirling Annual Golf Championship, will be held at Ladybank Golf Club in Fife, with all the other events held at Stirling Golf Club. Scores from each of the events count towards the Ian Thomson Order of Merit. Prizes are also awarded to Male (Scratch), Female (Scratch) and Handicap winners at the end of the year. The Intramural golf events are a great opportunity to put your golfing skills (or lack of) to the test and also serve as a good day out!
Dumyat Hill Race
This is the challenge of all challenges. A psychologist, propping up the Gannochy bar one day, bet that no one could run to the top of Dumyat and back down again in less than an hour. He lost his £1 bet on Graduation day in 1971 by three minutes when the first Dumyat Hill Race took place and was completed in 57 minutes. The race has been held annually ever since and is a major event both in the intramural and the hill running calendar. In 2006, 210 runners took part, competing in the male, female, veteran open and university categories. You can’t call yourself a real athlete until you have completed this race!
These events, in addition to the current intramural tournaments, will be advertised all over the university and on the intramural notice board, located outside the games hall in the Gannochy sports centre. Further information can also be attained from Tommy Craig on (01786) 466904 or by email at thomas.craig@stir.ac.uk, so keep your eyes open, pick up an entry form and dig those trainers out!
