The Sports Union Awards
Throughout the year Sports Union clubs, members and coaches are given the chance to compete for some of the prestigious awards on offer. All of the nomination forms can be found below, and should be emailed to g.e.parry@stir.ac.uk by the close of nominations on Monday 12th March 2012 at 12noon.
This trophy is awarded annually to the most outstanding sports person of the year. They must be full time students or full time members of staff and members of the Sports Union at the time of the performance considered worthy of the award. There is a very high standard of sports person competing for this award, with previous winners representing their country at their chosen sports. Sports Bursars are not eligible. There must be a clear winner and the award cannot be shared.
This trophy commemorates the late H.H. Donnelly, the first Secretary of Stirling University (1.1.66-15.6.69), who ensured that provision was made for excellent sports facilities in the first plans for the new University of Stirling and who was appointed the first Director of Physical Recreation. This trophy is awarded to the most outstanding club of the year and is probably the most keenly sought after trophy within the Sports Union.
In 1992, the Sports Union created a new trophy, coinciding with the 25th Anniversary of the University, to acknowledge an outstanding one-off achievement by a club. This could be an outstanding result, or performance in a competition.

The Airthrey Trophy is awarded to the most outstanding sports person of the year, but it is open to bursars. Catriona Lambert graduated from Stirling in 1994 and in her time here has proved to be possibly the most outstanding sports person to attend this University getting selected to compete in the Curtis Cup twice. The medal is now awarded annually to the most outstanding bursar for the year.
1989 saw the inaugural award of this magnificent silver plate. This plate is dedicated to the memory of Kevin Mathers the Men’s Hockey Club Captain who tragically died in 1995 of Cancer. The recipient of the award need not necessarily be of exceptional sporting ability, but will have given exceptional service to the Sports Union over a number of years. The service may be in the form of consistent enthusiasm, commitment or achievement and need not be to the Union in general but perhaps to a specific club.
First awarded in 2002, this trophy was donated by Rugby Men’s whose former captain was tragically killed in the Twin Towers atrocity on 11 September 2001. It is awarded to the best volunteer coach in the University.
Another recent addition to the Sports Union Trophy cabinet, this pays tribute to our current Director of Sports Development to thank him for his services to Student sport over the years. It is awarded to the most outstanding Professional Coach.

This award category seeks to acknowledge the work and commitment that goes on " behind the scenes" usually without the accolades of success. The Colours Awards are presented to individuals whose loyalty and commitment to a particular club or sport can be said to be "exceptional". Behind the award lies the hard work necessary to make every club as efficient as possible.
To ensure that the person you wish to nominate meets the criteria for Blues or Colours, please aqaint yourself with the Blues and Colours Code.
