I’m Andy Combe, a final year undergraduate running for SUSA President. It’s time to put Your Union in Your Hands: o More effective student representation through direct communication with individual academic departments, urging the University to act upon its neglected claim to be ‘Student Based, Research Led.’ o Increase funding through sponsorship to become less dependent on the bloc grant. o Vastly increase training, guidance, and volunteering opportunities for clubs and societies coupled with more support for the Student Activities Officer. o Produce a policy catalogue and effect SUSA’s governing framework through better communication across the committee structure. o Lobby the University for: electronic submission of coursework as common practice; further investment in internet journals and other research tools; more effective consultation and communication with students.
o Initiate independent, active and ongoing engagement with academic unions.
o Forge links with other Students’ Associations and people based charities in Scotland, creating a comprehensive welfare support network with improved and prolonged training for welfare volunteers.
o Ensure that the liberation campaigns form an autonomous and positively driven place at the heart of SUSA.
o Scrap private membership status of the Robin’s centre to make it more competitive with other venues.
o Run commercial operations out-with semester time, using the profits to: help renovate Glow; subsidise catering; increase funding for clubs and societies.
o Overhaul of Ent’s line up: live music; more comedy; more support for the likes of Cult45 and Alter Ego.
o Rejuvenate catering in the Robin’s Centre: a juice, salad and sandwich bar; the introduction of ethical and fair-trade alternatives; prepaid meal cards.
o Promote and encourage student involvement in SUSA as an integral part of the student experience.
o Redevelop SUSA’s office space; creating a more effective work space and finding more storage for club equipment.
o Facilitate the Sports Union corporate sponsorship concept through branding and the production and marketing of a business plan.
o Work with the Sports Union to pressure the Sports Centre for fifteen week and 365 day memberships starting at any time.
o Pursue a more effective partnership with Student Recruitment and Admissions, particularly the Ambassador and Study Abroad schemes.
o Face-lift Brig and the media services, making them a necessity of Stirling’s student sphere; reformatted and new publications for the new academic year.
o President’s campaign on study, work and volunteer opportunities abroad: ‘It’s a Big Bad World.’
