During my time here at University, Airtv has been one of my biggest passions. I have been involved in the activities of Airtv since I was in first year. I have had a number of committee positions over the years, including Head of Creative Programming, Equipment Officer as well as Deputy Station Manager and have been actively involved in leading workshops, meetings, projects as well as hosting a number of Airtv events. As a result of this, I have made many strong friendships with others through Airtv who sure the same passion for the Stations success Now going into my fourth year at University I would very much like the opportunity to take on the role of Airtv Station Manager to continue to work alongside other with the same passion in order to build and improve Stirlings student television station which I have been so invested in over the years. As Airtv Station Manager, I would have the following priorities. 1. CREATING CONTENT. - Working closely with each committee member on an individual level to help them develop their plans for their departments and actively help them put these plans into practice over the course of the year. - To have pre-planned projects in each department prior to the first meetings of Airtv to get members immediately involved in practical work. - Moving main focus away from meetings and more towards building a network of members who interact with each other and the society primarily through active practical work in different departments. - Begin the training of members with equipment editing on a one-on-one and individual basis. Start by working to train each committee member individually so that they can pass these skills on to the members in their departments. - As Station Manager, I will also focus on splitting the activities of Airtv in two; into production and technical. - 1. Production will involve Committee as well as interested members using production room to come up with content regardless of which department it is attached to but rather based on what members want to make and what would have a potential audience. For the committee in charge of different departments, their responsibility will be guide the overall planning of production together in the interest of making sure each of their own departments is properly represented in what is being planned at production. Once content has been decided on for the next few weeks, members will be actively encouraged to take the lead on different projects, being given responsibility regarding the production and organisation. They will do this under the guidance of the heads of the departments, who will continue actively producing their own share of content also decided at production room. 2. Technical will involve taking a team of interested members and focus on training them up individually (during office hours) with equipment and editing software as well as production and directing techniques for different forms of content. The members being trained will then, in turn, be used by those planning the production of different projects. It is perfectly acceptable for members to be involved in both production planning and technical training of much as they want. The idea is to simply create a system of making content based on the individual merits and interests of those taking an interest in Airtv. As already stated, this is part of the plan to make the main interaction between the society to be via the production of active content and social events more in the place of meetings. - Continuing to promote the podcast. As content is produced by the station and its members, it will go immediately online and onto the podcast for viewing. As content for the podcast continues to grow, hopefully so will viewing and download figures. This will be in addition to continuing to upload all content on to the new website. - When enough quality content is available, continuing to put on shows in Studio, showcasing only our best work. I believe we should try to create an atmosphere where people want to really work to get their own content into the Studio show. - Work with head of publicity to start targeting specific audiences for the shows content. For example, if sport has recently covered a big match on campus then target the sport union with publicity about how they can watch it online. Or if it’s a series of small documentary pieces on a big project by another society, ensure the content is properly advertised to that society and make sure it is easy to access for them. Target individual audiences with the podcast and website and then, with the wider audience built through this, push larger audiences for the Studio shows, with an aim to turn them into show screenings events in themselves. - Starting early planning for ‘The Oscars’ so that they can be advertised and promoted from an early stage to maximize interest. Try to generate more interest still by looking into inviting guest speakers to present certain awards. - As we gain a larger visible audience for Airtv, start to push our marketing department more in order to get advertising and investment on board. - Continuing to expand and improve the new website. Start to use the website more and more as one of our main platforms of production planning for everyone wanting to be involved in the society by working on the websites capabilities as well as making sure that future members will have full control and understanding of the website for their own time, to do with it as they please. - The allocation of budget towards better sound equipment. With the arrival of two XL1’s from the film and media department to accompany an existing XL1 and two small Sony’s, Airtv is pretty sorted for cameras at the moment, especially since High Definition would be largely wasted in the podcast. However, an investment into a high quality sound kit would really make the difference, both online and in a busy union, between amateur and professional. - Continue thinking of ways Airtv can make money outside of its original budget. This will continuing to look into fundraisers such as the weekly film quiz, the sale of DVDs of Airtv content as well as the coverage of live events i.e. plays, debates, etc and, once Airtv has a big enough visible audience, build relationships with those who may be willing to give us sponsorship. - To ensure that the budget plus additional funds are fully assigned and invested and not left over at the end of the year to be swallowed up. Also start to put in to place long term spending plans regarding larger purchases for Airtv in the future i.e. new cameras. One of the selling points of Airtv has always been as a provider of quality and professional equipment. To continue to upkeep this reputation, Airtv will need to make long term plans in order to make the larger purchases necessary in order to keep with the professional market. - Building closer links with the other media societies, Brig and Air3, for the sharing and convergence of resources as well as closer links with the Stirling Film and Media department.
As a student television station, Airtv needs content. Therefore, my first goal as station manager would be to produce as much quality content throughout the year as possible. I plan to do this by:
3. DISTRIBUTION
Once content has been created that members are proud of, they will be keen to show it to the world. This is one of the main drawing factors of Airtv, as it provides people with a wider audience for their work. As station manager I will try to continue to widen this audience by:
4. INVESTMENT
Airtv is growing. However, this is a steady growth that will take time and long term planning is needed to help shape it. As station manager I would like to make a number of investments that members could reap the benefits from for years to come. These would include:
