Air3 Radio Manifesto Kerry Abercrombie My name is Kerry Abercrombie and I am running for the position of Air3 Station Manager, I am a second year student reading English, Education and Film & Media. Being a part of Air3 Radio has been, without a doubt the most rewarding aspect of returning to university life. Over the past year and a half I have thrown myself into the society with tremendous gusto and without a backwards glance. My time in Air3 both as a committee member (positions including Head of Tech, Head of Web and, my current position, Deputy Station Manager) and a show host has allowed me to bear witness and work with two tremendous station managers – it is my aim to maintain the high standards they have set while all the time looking towards new and creative opportunities for growth and expansion. I care enormously about Air3 as a station, but more importantly I am passionate about the people who invest their time and effort into making the station what it is – I speak of course, of our members. Air3 radio is made brilliant not by ‘shows’ but by people. By the ideas, the personalities, the skills, the creativity and the effort of the individuals who chose to join us. The main focus for our society is the production and broadcasting of radio, I want to give our members the widest possible scope for the development of their skills and aptitudes in creating radio by; - Fostering an environment within which members are able to harness and apply their creativity, express personality and try new things as well as make mistakes and learn by developing themselves through practice. - Ensuring all members have access to both basic training and advanced technical training pertaining to the range of ‘core skills’ used most frequently within our society. (Production, broadcasting, editing, interviewing, use of technical sound equipment.) - Effectively communicating the services, availability of resources and opportunities available to our members and providing relevant information on how they can access and utilize these to greatest effect. - Creating a network both as a station and as a society of people with a shared vested interest. A network through which people can learn new skills, make new friends and forge useful contacts linked with divisions of the media at large which may be useful to the advancement of their future careers. Currently Air3 holds a well established position both at university level and within the Student Radio Association. It is an objective of mine to build upon this and further our reputation within the student body at Stirling university and within the local community thus creating further opportunities for our members. This goal is not a particularly easy one but I feel that by giving attention to the following points we can move forward as a station and generate a wider audience in the process. - The current focus within the society is on live broadcasting. I hope to put more emphasis on recorded content which will allow members more freedom to be creative. There is a massive difference between what it is possible to do on live radio and what it is possible to do when creating recorded programming. We have the resources to create recorded content – there is absolutely no reason why we cannot offer the opportunity to create investigative pieces, features, public interest stories, radio drama or any other type of recorded showcase. - By forging and maintaining professional relationships with key members of local music scenes we can instantly tap into audiences who already have an interest in what we do. Examples of this can already be seen within Air3 in both the New Music Show and the Features Team who have both effectively used their contacts to generate content and broaden audiences. Having bands appear on shows to do live sessions allows us to reach people who might never have listened in otherwise. By aligning ourselves with local promoters we can extend our publicity to a wider scale as well as offering them the chance to broaden their capabilities by providing them with a forum of communication they would not otherwise have. -As a society I would like to encourage the advancement of a more social aspect. I would like society meetings to be an open forum for all members to have their own input, make suggestions and give their opinions on the direction of Air3. Air3 is Stirling University’s Student Radio Station - it is not a radio station that simply happens to be based in Stirling University. I would like to bring together the entire society's view on how we run ourselves in the most open way possible. I would like our members to feel that they are part of the station and part of a society that they have control of – that it is their voice. - By working closely with the other media societies and creating strong cross-platform bonds, we can share equipment and skills to enhance the output of all media societies. This past year in particular has seen this done to great effect and the ethos for collaboration and co-operation which has been exemplified by the current media presidents is already being continued in the meetings and liaisons shared by those running for the positions within this election. Air3 Radio has a very special place in the hearts of many students who have come and gone. I intend to do everything within the realms of my capability to ensure that it remains a creative, fun and rewarding society to be a part of. We have incredible resources and opportunities available to us – I intend to ensure that people are free and able to get the most they possibly can from it.
