Women’s officer manifesto

Who is Danielle Kelly?

I am a first year student who has been involved with the Women’s Group all year and I have been their Campaigns Officer since December. Since then I have been actively involved in planning campaigns, such as ‘Free Hugs’ and ‘Action Against Gender Violence’. I feel very strongly about the inequalities that women face. I think there is a need for information to be more readily available, and also that there are still attitudes dominating society that are very negative towards women. I also am a welfare volunteer within the university, which coincides with the roles of liberation officers, and creates access to more information and resources.

What am I going to do?

Fight for a safer campus by proposing more lighting in areas such as Alexander Court, which is dimly lit and unsafe for anyone at night. I will also hold ‘Reclaim the Night’ marches for women on campus. Women should be free to walk anywhere at any time without fear or assault or abuse.

Promote relevant resources. I will try to make information more readily available to the women on campus, including issues such as contraception and sexual health. I will liaise with the Health Promotion Officer, and VP Education and Engagement on both these and a Mental Health Campaign.

Campaign.  I will continue to run ‘Breast Cancer Awareness’ and ‘Action Against Gender Violence’ campaigns, but also become more involved in often overlooked campaigns such as ‘Dignity Period’. I hope to be more involved with other liberation groups such as LGBT and International Students to support liberation campaigns and the women within them. I will also support campaigns on a wider scale, such as campaigning to close the existing pay gap between men and women.

Feminism. I will promote understanding of the feminist movement and challenge negative stereotypes around feminism. I shall strive for solidarity amongst the female students of the University of Stirling and become a point of contact to resolve any issues of equality they may face.

Challenge sexism. I will continue to challenge sexism in every aspect. This includes positive discrimination, such as sexism in drinks and events promotion in the union. I will also challenge sexism in the attitudes of both male and female students, such as the double standards that still exist, not just within the university, but in society generally.

Promote equality in both genders. Promoting equal rights requires support for both the male and female gender. I will provide support for issues that men also face and have no support for, such as campaigning for testicular cancer awareness, and any other issues I become aware of that the male population have no support for.

Create a Safe Space. The women’s group will be run to provide a safe space for women to come and talk about their problems without fear of judgement. This safe space is for every woman regardless of political opinion or attitudes towards feminism.

NUS conferences. I will attend NUS conferences, both nationally and locally, and refer information back on to the student population, keeping them aware of current issues and the current campaigns that NUS support. I will also use these conferences to discuss any issues the female population are having on a wider scale with other women’s officers around the country, using their experience to make informed and accurate choices.

Give the students a voice. Before any other issue, I will be a representative of the female student population. Therefore I am in the position to let their views be heard and met with respect and consideration. I will support any relevant issue I am presented with, regardless of personal opinion.
