Joshua Hepple: Disabled Manifesto My name is Joshua Hepple and I am running for the position of Disabled Student’s Officer. I have had experience in both the disability and LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender) groups within the University. I have experience in representing student bodies. Last year whilst studying at Telford College I was the LGBT officer. This involved representing all LGBT students, being a voice for promoting gender, sexuality and equality throughout the university and resolving individual issues of members and supporting them. I believe the skills I picked up there can be transferred to helping disabled students throughout Stirling. I feel very passionate about disability as it affects me so much. I believe that people who are disabled are often seen as subjective and socially constricted. I believe in the social model of disability which believes that society disables the person as opposed to the person being disabled. I hope to help the social model to make society less disabling. I want to change people’s attitudes and prejudices towards disability so that people are not marginalised as they are just now. If elected I have several policies I would want to implement. There are many changes around campus that could be made accessible to all. An issue has been brought to my attention with regards the accessible doors. Ironically they are known to close on visually impaired people. In order to correct this problem I propose sliding doors that work automatically. Furthermore there needs to be easier access to more computer labs throughout the university for example in the Pathfoot building. The current computer lab used by disabled students is not easily accessible without assistance and as such the entire purpose of the room is defeated. This problem can also be seen on the orange lift also not easily used without assistance, this does not promote independence of disabled students and therefore needs to change. I also plan to work with Library management to ensure the library is as accessible as possible. The exams policy is in need of a serious update, all students need to be made aware of the situations sooner. In addition I want to open scribing to undergraduates, and have the backing of professional bodies in this matter. As your officer I will listen to you and would do WHAT YOU WANT! This will be achieved by working very closely with the president of the disabled students group. Moreover after listening to your concerns I will take them forward to the relevant person! I have also noticed a lack of support from student support services and I plan to work with them to reduce waiting lists for appointments. Additionally I will try my best to work with SAAS to reduce waiting times as many students, including myself, still haven’t received their full loan. I have already fixed many issues such as: raising awareness of disability for all and hope I can do more in the future.
Thank you for your consideration Joshua Hepple
