Tony Gillespie

Hi I’m Tony Gillespie.

I’ve been involved in the Sports Union for the last 4 years. I’m running for Sports Union President position because I’m tired of the Union talking about change that we can’t see. Over the past year the focus has been on procedure, process and finances. I believe that a Student Union is there to focus on students and that we need change that will actually affect your lives, change that you can see.

If you elect me I’ll focus on change which actually matters to you. I’ll fight for better facilities rather than just arrange meetings. I’ll help cut the red tape surrounding club finances. I’ll ensure that sports teams have a home in the union by opening long bar for longer on Wednesdays to accommodate Sports Union Teams. You can see my whole manifesto below. We’re running against current sabbaticals, who promised things last year and have spent the whole year on process and rebranding not actually making things better.

We’re really keen to see a union which values your opinions, makes changes that improve your lives and is there for you; it’s Your Union.

If you like what you see please join our facebook group spread the word and vote on the portal on the 22nd and 23rd of March.

Thanks.

Tony

My Manifesto

The Sports Union Brand

  • Work with the union to ensure the long term security of the Sports Union President and Sports Union.

  • Do more than just hold meetings on issues that matter to Sports Union Clubs and members.

  • Provide a Sports Union which respects and is proud of each and every sport.

  • Improve the administration process in the Union allowing clubs to operate more efficiently and give them faster and easier access to their own funds.

  • This will be accomplished by the improved utilisation of staff and committee training.

  • Work with the Sports Centre to ensure facilities are up to scratch and that everything that can be done to deliver the best service to your clubs is being done. If you have issues I will fight your corner tooth and nail until we see change.

  • Take a thoroughly hands on approach so as to gain a full understanding of your sport and give it the respect it deserves. This will be accomplished through attending club training sessions and holding regular meetings with club presidents.

  • Maintain the identity of the Sports Union whilst becoming less insular from the rest of the union. By working with the union we can improve not only the Stirling sports experience but also the student experience on the whole.

  • Club administration is structured around what suits the union and not what suits clubs. We’ll put the managing of your club finances back in your hands through committee training and take no longer than a week to process purchase orders and claims forms.

  • Develop better relations with Brig so that we can have a campus newspaper that reports Stirling University Sports News. Through generating a greater sense of pride in our achievements we can promote a much greater sense of community amongst the Sports Union and University as a whole.

  • Continue to develop the Union website and the University’s identity through the continuation of our relationship with our kit supplier.

  • Improve the standard of communication with clubs by answering all correspondence as promptly as possible and have dedicated office hours.

Club Development

  • Meet with club committees to outline their strategy and goals for the year and how the Sports Union can help you achieve them whilst ensuring that committee members are given the correct training. By holding regular meetings with club committees we can make sure that your club is heading in the right direction for your members.

  • Actively seek to improve funding to clubs through external sponsors of Sports Union events so that we can inject the money straight back into Sports Union Clubs. By making sure clubs are aware of external funding and opportunities we can maximise the potential of your Sports Union and your teams.

  • Better provisions for the Highland and Islands campuses which have no facilities, clubs or representation.

Your Union

  • Work to ensure Sports Teams have a home in the in the Robbins and are not left feeling ostracised from their own Students Union.  This will be accomplished through lobbying for extended opening hours in Long Bar on Wednesdays to give your team a home.

  • Revive the student union by improving and developing our relations with the Robbins and the Students Union as a whole. We are part of the same University and same Union, we should be working together and erase this year’s legacy of conflict.

  • Develop the presence of the Sports Union in the Students’ Union and in the atrium. We are Scotland’s University for Sporting Excellence and the majority of our students have no idea. We should be proud of our accomplishments.

  • Every club within the Sports Union will have different desires and goals for the year. From elite international performers through to those enjoying a recreational spot of Sport our Sports Union is here for you. We are Scotland’s University of Sporting Excellence and we should be remarkably proud of that.
