Mark Charters

Mark Charters - #1 for VP Education and Engagement

The union’s work over the last year, to support and develop, to entertain and engage, has been focused on you, the students, and we think why stop there? There is so much that we have done this year which we can build on and improve in the coming year. There are so many students and so many issues that we can unite together to ensure that the actions and opinions of every student matter.  And that is why we as a team have decided to run in this election.

Make it matter vote Rhianna, Jamie, Mark and Ross online on the 22nd/23rd of March

What we will deliver for students:

Making you more employable – working with clubs and socs, Sports clubs, departmental course reps and CDC to give you more opportunities to develop transferable skills. Facilitating internships with local businesses and the students’ union, so when you graduate you get the job that you want

Revolutionise the Course Rep Network – The course rep system is broken. There are amazing course reps out there, but there are not enough of them and the system doesn’t work. We want students to be able to change their courses for the better and to do that they need the support, development and engagement we can provide.

Reduce the effect of Academic Cuts– it is no secret that public sector funding is getting cut by the government, Universities are calling for increased tuition in England and the debate will hit Scotland soon. We pledge to fight increases to tuition fees and to ensure that those academic cuts do not harm your educational experience.

Lecture Podcasts – at exam time how often do you wish you’d been to that lecture or listened more when they mentioned that theory? Well with recorded lectures available on webct you can watch them all over again. The technology is there and some departments already do it. We think more should!

Get Online Submission of Work – How often have you had to rush your essay last minute so you get it into uni on time? How much money do you spend printing your essays and reports? We think that students have enough financial pressures and time constraints as it is to be stressed out about handing in work to the office. Online submission of work is not only easier on the pocket but ethically friendly and time efficient too.

Exam Feedback for every student – This year was spent working with the university management to get buy in and now it is time for action. Students need to understand their strong and weak areas within their education; exam feedback is essential for this.

Learn from mistakes; don’t fail for them! – Too often plagiarism is not understood until you get called in for doing it. We will fight for ‘Turn it in’ to be a learning tool rather than a method of plagiarism punishment.

Staggered exams and assignments – Assignment schedules often leave students having to hand in three essays on the same day or doing two exams in a day. This puts high pressure on students and detrimental to their performance. We will fight to get assignments better spaced throughout the semester and exams set with realistic breaks for study.

Reward work done within Clubs and Socs, Sports Clubs and Course Reps – Many students put a lot of work into running events and activities through clubs and societies and sports clubs. This work allows others to have fun at university and encourages a campus community. We feel that this work should be recognised and we pledge to implement a national recognised award system for all volunteers.

Provide students with professionally trained and experienced support – This year I have worked with vast numbers of students to support them through their time at University. I have reintroduced the welfare volunteer system which went live this semester with a dedicated team of professionally trained volunteers now fully prepared to support students while at Uni. Next year taking this forward we can expand on the current system and work in further collaboration with university support services to make sure that every student has the support they need.

Long term student support staff – It is a strategic goal of the union to have a fulltime staff member dedicated to student support and welfare issues by 2013, we will deliver on this! Through achieving external funding we can implement a support staff member by the end of next year and provide professional continuity to student support within the union.
