Andy Cuthbertson

Hi I’m Andy Cuthbertson,

I’ve been involved in the Union for the last three and a half years. I’m running for Vice President, Activities and Development. I’m tired of our Union talking about change that we can’t see. All the sabbaticals for the past 2 years have focused on procedure, process and finances. I believe that a Student Union is there to focus on students and that we need a change that will actually affect your lives, change that you can see.

If you elect me I’ll focus on change which actually matters to you. I’ll give £10,000 to clubs and societies which they will actually get, unlike last year. I will create a dedicated clubs space with computers they can use, another thing promised every year with no delivery. I will slash non-alcoholic drink prices in your union as you should not be penalised for sensibility and I will create a better marketing structure for meal and drink deals whilst improving the price and the quality. You can see my whole manifesto below.

I am running in a team with Alba Brown for President, Tony Gillespie for Sports Union President and Jacob Longstaff for VP Education and Engagement. We are running against current sabbaticals, who promised things last year and have spent the whole year on process and rebranding the Union not actually making anything better and not doing anything which directly affects students.

We’re really keen to see a union which values your opinions, makes changes that improve your lives and is there for you; it’s Your Union.

If you like what you see please join our facebook group spread the word and vote on the portal on the 22nd and 23rd of March.

Thanks,

Andy Cuthbertson

My Manifesto

Club Development

  • This year clubs haven’t kept in the loop. We need a comprehensive mailing list so we can keep clubs updated.

  • We’ll improve the clubs handbook. It doesn’t help anybody start a club, run a club or develop a club. There’s no point redesigning handbooks if the content isn’t up to scratch.

  • We’ll offer monthly club training, which you can book and we’ll tailor it to starting a club, fundraising, event planning and membership development suited to your needs.

  • We’ll provide a dedicated clubs space and computer for you to use. It’s promised every year but it’s never done. We’ll develop a database of potential sponsors, contacts for other University clubs and useful University contacts for you to access.

  • Club administration is structured around what will suit the Union, not what will help clubs. We’ll put the managing of your club finances back in your hands through committee training and we’ll take no longer than a week to process purchase orders and expense claims.

  • The Union is too authoritarian on what clubs can start up and they impose minimum memberships. If you want to start a club and it doesn’t already exist we’ll let you start and we’ll half the minimum membership levels.

  • Last year we were promised £10k for club funding, but thousand was spent on process. We’ll actually deliver £10k in genuine funding for your clubs.

Entertainments and Commercial

  • The Union says it’s cheap but it’s not. We’ll lower soft drink cans to 80p, pitchers to £5 and introduce meal deals which are actually deals!!

  • There’s not enough difference between studio and longbar. We’ll improve the quality of food and make a clear difference between the bars.

  • The Union feedback cards always ask for better customer service and to get rid of the chairs. We’ll actually listen to you and make change you can see.

  • The Union events schedule seems to be thought of on a week to week basis. We’ll publish each semester events at the start so you know what on when.

  • It’s hypocritical of the Union to pay 22 and 21 year olds different amounts when they take about equal opportunities. We’ll equalize pay for all ages.

Community

  • The Union seems to spend much of its time dividing students, not creating a community. We need to stop having petty arguments and actually start changing things for students. The Union needs to be the centre of the student community.

  • The Student Leadership Prgoramme has failed this year because too much was focused on the process behind it not on involving students. We need a development programme which is funded, engaging and focused around making students.

  • We need to start engaging the wider community. It was tried this year but was focused around just the President. We ran a community radio show which involved school children and charities. This is actual community engagement!
