Ross Main

Ross Main #1 for VP Activities and Development

The union’s work over the last year, to support and develop, to entertain and engage, has been focused on you, the students, and we think why stop there? There is so much that we have done this year which we can build on and improve in the coming year. There are so many students and so many issues that we can unite together to ensure that the actions and opinions of every student matter.  And that is why we have decided to run in this election.

Make it Matter Vote Rhianna, Jamie, Mark and Ross online on the 22nd/23rd of March

What we will deliver for students
:

Making you more employable – working with clubs and socs, Sports clubs, departmental course reps and CDC to give you more opportunities to develop transferable skills. Facilitating internships with local businesses and the students’ union, so when you graduate you get the job that you want.

More internships and volunteering opportunities for students – It’s harder to get a job once you’ve graduated and experience is vital. Working with local businesses, councils, schools, charities, CDC and university departments we will work to get more opportunities for students to gain experience in the local community and within the Students’ Union so that you can get the experience you need for after graduation.

Increase clubs and society budget to £15,000 – Last year we increased club funding from £1K to £10K. This year we pledge an extra £5K and each club gets £150 to help kick start their year.

Online sports and non sports clubs membership system – over 40% of students are involved in sports clubs or non sports clubs and societies; this brings with it a lot of administration for both you the student and the student union. We will develop an online registration system so you can become a member of the clubs you want to by simply logging onto your portal.

Run Stirling’s 1st Clubs and Socs Ball – The Sports Union is often seen to get special treatment from the students union’, having more funding and more events. We feel that this should change and clubs and societies receive more equal treatment. The work of clubs, societies and members will be recognised and awarded with volunteers’ recognition awards presented at a large formal ball.

Introduce Clubs and Socs Executive – Clubs and Socs should have more say in how they are promoted, governed and developed. We will introduce a clubs and socs executive to allow clubs to manage themselves.

Reward work done within Clubs and Socs, Sports Clubs and Course Reps – Many students put a lot of work into running events and activities through clubs and societies and sports clubs. This work allows others to have fun at university and encourages a campus community. We feel that this work should be recognised and we pledge to implement a national recognised award system for all volunteers.

Fund and develop Media Socs to Invest for the future - The University has a huge arts and humanities remit with departments in journalism and film and media yet they have minimal engagement with our media societies. We pledge to not only continue to fund the Media Socs but also develop a co-curricular programme to develop students involved and ensure a high quality long term service.

Fight for Free Wednesday Afternoons – more and more students are getting classes on Wednesday afternoons, this is causing problems for people who want to get involved in sport or who have to work to fund themselves through uni. We pledge to lobby and win back Wednesday afternoons for students so you can get the most out of your time at uni.

Reinvent the Glow deal – Sports and non sports clubs used to raise over 30K a year through this scheme and we are sure that this can happen again. Working with clubs and sports clubs in collaboration we will run nights that students want with all ticket money going to those clubs that were involved.

Develop the off campus community – Students are often viewed as disruptive and detrimental to the local area. However Students make Stirling and we need to work at changing the perceptions of our wider community. We will develop projects focused on community engagement and local participation such as a community garden, youth leadership project like Brownies and Scouts, and local charity work.

Run high profile fundraising events – This year we introduced our first Charities Officer dedicated to raising money for good causes. We will work with local charities, community projects and both sports and non-sports clubs and societies to raise money for local and national charities.

Host events for the non traditional student – the idea of a student has changed from what it used to be, over 18% of students at Stirling are international, 21% are Part time, and 43% are mature. The students’ union needs to diversify its mix of events to cater for all students and not simply the undergraduate home student. We plan to work with the new Postgraduate Officer, Liberation Officers that wish to take part, and actual students to host events and activities so that all students can benefit from their union.

Good quality and student priced– The union has fluctuated from deal to deal, with food and drink deals regularly changing ad-hoc. We will run student led market research to inform our pricing strategy on food and drinks taking into account your pocket and not our presumptions.

Reinvent the space we have – Glow sits unused for ¾ of the time during semester yet has great potential for new activities. Studio is packed when big games are shown but it is difficult to get a good view of the match. Using glow more effectively for sport (projectors are already in place to do this), study (can’t take a burger into the library) and clubs and socs activities (it is the biggest room we have).
