I’ve been involved in the Union for the last 3 years. I’m running for VP Education and Engagement because I’m fed up of the Union talking about change that we can’t see. All the sabbaticals for the past 2 years have focused on procedure, process and finances. I believe that a Student Union is there to focus on students and that we need change that will actually affect your lives, change that you can see.
If you elect me I’ll focus on change which actually matters to you. I’ll campaign hard to make sure that your library works for you, campaign hard for the exam feedback that we all want and deserve as well as lobbying for officers which actually try to engage students and you can see my whole manifesto below.
I am running in a team with Alba Brown for President, Tony Gillespie for Sports Union President, Andy Cuthbertson for VP Activities and Development. We’re running against current sabbaticals, who promised things last year and have spent the whole year on process and rebranding not actually making things better for us. We’re really keen to see a union which values your opinions, makes changes that improve your lives and is there for you; it’s Your Union.
If you like what you see please join our facebook group spread the word and vote on the portal on the 22nd and 23rd of March.
Thanks,
Jacob Longstaff

My Manifesto
Education
It has been said before that getting you exam feedback was a high priority but all they’ve done is have meetings. If elected you will see high profile campaigns as well as behind the scenes lobbying will be taken to the University to Fight your cause.
How many times have we been in Lectures and the lecturer has to beg the students to volunteer themselves as course reps. This needs to be changed, people need to be proud of Representing their peers. The easiest way for this to be achieved is to get the recognition that students deserve for the commitment that they have shown by being course reps.
Coming to university for the first time can be a daunting experience which we have all gone through, but one area where a fast amount of change can be made for better can be in timetabling and giving assistance to first years in working out where they need to be.
Something which the union could do better is to bring in online tutorials for students talking through issues which students face especially at the start of their university career.
This year we’ve put up with a below par library and without a doubt the new library needs to be something special to make up for it. If elected I will ensure that your new library experience will be as smooth as possible, with a library that opens 8am to 2am and the option to pay those library fines online.
The way in which our university works with students being able to take modules in all different departments across the campus comes with problems for students, you may be required to use footnotes for one subject and then an hour later you might have to use the Harvard system. Without a doubt this is detrimental to students experience, and if elected I will Lobby the university and actively campaign on your behalf to standardise a referencing system for the university as a whole as much as possible.
Engagement
The Past year it has been hard for people to get in touch with their officers in their union. If elected I will bring about office hours for all officers so you know where and when you can get face to face contact with your officers representing you.
Added to this a better induction and structured training for all officers, this is especially necessary with a lot of new officer positions being created this year.
There needs to be a better reporting mechanism which would mean that the number of students would be able to see what’s happening in the union would be a lot higher.
The Union’s campaigning for the past year has been non-existent, we need to stop running campaigns which just tell you things, but actually cause change you can see.
Ensuring that work load is such that there is no duplication of work in the union for staff members meaning that there is more time to spend on issues facing students.
Better induction for 1st years into the union, make sure that its not a week of high contact with the union to then being cut off, there needs to be a more progressive system with effective, long lasting inductions
Getting you involved with the decision making process as much as possible the best way to do this would be to introduce a system whereby students can vote for the issues which they feel strongly about online.
