Start a Club!

Fancy starting your own club? Here’s a few easy steps to follow and you’ll be on your way….

Becoming an Affiliated Club

You will need:

A Constitution – Every club or society must have a Constitution which outlines the aims and objectives of your club, as well as governance rules and committee positions. Once you have written a constitution you will need to submit it to the Students Union for approval.

Please see our Sample Constitution. Please email your drafted Constitution to the Student Activities & Sport Coordinator at elena.sarra@stir.ac.uk

10 Paid Members – Every club or society must have a minimum of 10 paid members in order to affiliate. These must be official members who have paid a membership fee to the club. The current minimum membership fee is £3.00 and there is no upper limit. Please download and fill a Membership list form and return to  theunion@stir.ac.uk. This form must be submitted electronically.

Membership money – When submitting the official club membership list you must also submit your membership money. For instance, if you have set your membership fee at £3.00 and you have 10 paid members, you will need to pay in £30. This money will then be deposited in an account in the name of the club under the main Union bank account.

Please submit a membership list form electronically before submitting membership money, which you will be able to do in person at the Union office 9am-5pm Monday to Friday.

As the students Union is a charity and is accountable to its charity regulators there a will be certain activities/items a club will not be allowed to spend money on. For more details please contact us at theunion@stir.ac.uk.

Committee List – These are the positions tasked with running the club or society. Committee positions must be listed in the club’s constitution and people must be elected in the positions democratically, by vote at a club AGM. You can have as many or as few positions as you like, provided that you have the following : President, Treasurer and Secretary. Please download and fill a Committee list form and submit electronically to theunion@stir.ac.uk

Inventory Form – If your club owns any equipment or material it will be covered by our insurance policy, provided that the club submits this form upon affiliation each year. Please download and fill the Inventory Form and submit to theunion@stir.ac.uk

On top of the above outlined steps, there are a few golden rules every society must follow:

  1. Clubs must at all times operate according to the Students Union Constitution, Schedules and policies. (Please click on the links to read our Constitution and Schedules)

  1. No club can duplicate the aims and objectives of other existing and currently active clubs.

  1. Clubs must be started and run by currently enrolled University of Stirling students.

  1. Clubs are not allowed to open a private Bank account. By affiliating with the Students Union clubs and their expenditures become accountable to charity regulations.
