MANIFESTO
Being involved in Airtv while I’ve been at Stirling has been one of my biggest passions. Since taking a new direction under the current station manager, Airtv has recently come a long way and being involved in this change has been a fantastic experience. Over my time at Airtv, I’ve been involved in the following-
- I’ve been head of the creative department over the past year and have taken an active role in organising projects as well as getting members actively involved in them and helping many other members develop their own projects.
- I set up the Airtv production room at the start of the year which I have since been running every week during semester, attendance for which has continued to rise since it first started.
- I’ve taken an active practical role in every department of Airtv over the years, including news, sport and music and have worked closely with the heads of these departments over their content.
- I’ve gained an extensive technical knowledge of the equipment and editing programmes by working with them on a regular basis.
However, Airtv still has a long way to go. Here, I’ll explain how, as station manager of Airtv, I would continue to take Airtv forward to reach its full potential.
1. CREATING CONTENT.
As a student television station, Airtv needs content. Therefore, my first goal as station manager would be to produce as much quality content throughout the year as possible. I plan to do this by:
- Working closely with each committee member on an individual level to help them develop their plans for their departments and actively help them put these plans into practice over the course of the year.
- To have pre-planned projects in each department prior to the first meetings of Airtv to get members immediately involved in practical work.
- Moving main focus away from meetings and more towards building a network of members who interact with each other and the society primarily through active practical work in different departments.
- Begin the training of members with equipment and computer programmes on a one-on-one and individual basis. Start by working to train each committee member individually so that they can pass these skills on to the members in their departments.
- Introducing a workable and easy system for equipment bookings run by an equipment officer.
2. DISTRIBUTION
Once content has been created that members are proud of, they will be keen to show it to the world. This is one of the main drawing factors of Airtv, as it provides people with a wider audience for their work. As station manager I will try to continue to widen this audience by:
-Continuing to promote the new podcast. As content is produced by the station and its members, it will go immediately online and onto the podcast for viewing. As content for the podcast continues to grow, hopefully so will viewing and download figures.
- When enough quality content is available, compiling a “best of” show from the podcast to be screened in Studio. Try to turn these screenings into social events for the society, encouraging members to come along and be merry!
- Work with head of publicity to start targeting specific audiences for the shows content. For example, if sport has recently covered a big match on campus then target the sport union with publicity about how they can watch it online.
- Starting early planning for ‘The Oscars’ so that they can be advertised and promoted from an early stage to maximize interest. Try to generate more interest still by looking into inviting guest speakers to present certain awards.
3. INVESTMENT
Airtv is growing. However, this is a steady growth that will take time and long term planning is needed to help shape it. As station manager I would like to make a number of investments that members could reap the benefits from for years to come. These would include:
- Continuing to expand and improve the new website.
- The allocation of budget towards better sound equipment. With the arrival of two XL1’s from the film and media department to accompany an existing XL1 and two small Sony’s, Airtv is pretty sorted for cameras at the moment, especially since High Definition would be largely wasted in the podcast. However, an investment into a high quality sound kit would really make the difference, both online and in a busy union, between amateur and professional.
- Start thinking of ways Airtv can make money outside of its original budget. This could include fundraisers, sponsorship or the sales of Oscar DVDs.
- Ensuring the budget for Airtv plus additional funds are fully assigned and invested and not left over at the end of the year.
- Building closer links with the other media societies, Brig and Air3, for the sharing and convergence of resources as well as closer links with the Stirling Film and Media department.
