Being a part of Air3’s phenomenal growth over the past two years has been an experience I would not trade for anything. In the past two years I’ve:
- Publicised the station across the University
- Built a fully functional website
- Helped to arrange events, not only for our society, but for the University
- Gained an expansive knowledge of both the technical side of the station and the management side of the station.
I have also helped the station manager with the day to day running of the station and in that time I have:
- Helped to renovate the studio, and recently redecorate it entirely.
- Ensured that the studio is in top condition and that all equipment is working
- Promoted ongoing training with the society’s members to ensure they are getting the most out of Air3.
- Helped to implement and teach master classes in various fields of radio.
It is my intention to continue Air3’s massive growth set in place by the previous station manager and ensure that when I graduate, Air3 will be in a perfect place for the next station manager. I intend to do this through:
Committee:
- It is my intention to ensure that my committee will get the most out of their time on the station. Through well defined weekly tasks and meetings, it is my belief that each member of committee will be able to develop skills to take them in to the next year, graduation and beyond.
- To promote available committee spaces effectively within the society. I want to find the best people for each job, and not just the first person who comes to light. I want to ensure that every position is contended and I will do this by forging closer links between committee and the society and effectively publicising empty positions at; meetings, on our website, our notice board and in every e-mail to ensure candidates are given time to prepare for elections.
- To ensure that there is a full committee in place at the end of my year as station manager.
Members:
- To ensure that each and every member gets exactly what he or she was looking for when they signed up to Air3. Whether they want a show, to join a team, or simply be involved in the day to day running of the station, I want each member to feel that they are getting the most of the society. I want to do this through what I’ll call ‘The Follow Up Program’, where I will create a human resources position within the committee. That person’s job will be to ensure that every member is having their needs met and that no one who joins just falls through the cracks. Previously this job has been left to whoever has felt the need to contact people, but by creating an extra position to do specifically this, I feel it will maximise the relationship between the committee and the society.
- Through ongoing training, I hope to provide Air3’s members with the experience required to not only help them in their courses, but when they graduate as well. I intend on doing this by offering more standardised software and hardware. This year we are purchasing a new Mac and will be creating an editing suite. I would like to purchase Pro Tools as it is industry standard and is used by the University’s Film and Media Department on all audio projects. Audacity and Garage Band are all well and good, but Pro Tools is ace.
- To ensure that the society’s members are aware of every opportunity we offer, whether that is committee positions, radio events across the country or simply working within one of our departments. I intend on doing this through a better open door policy within the society. Although we do already operate one, it is flawed and I believe with a few minor tweaks, such as making our Constitution available to all members, we can allow for a much more open relationship between the committee and the society.
Links with the Film and Media Department
- This has in fact already begun within the station; a show has been put in a place by Catriona MacPhee, the remit of which is to showcase audio packages made by students within the Film and Media department.
- However, I intend on taking this further, I believe that after the Film and Media and Journalism departments, the first point of contact for a first year studying the course should be Air3, AirTV or Brig as there is little, to no experience offered other than theory in the first two years of study.
Links with the University
- We’ve always said that we’d love to have the station played in laundrettes, computer labs and other communal spaces within the University. We’ve broken in to labs, but it is my intention to have the station in Laundrettes, Studio, Long Bar and in some communal areas in halls. I have already begun research in to the feasibility of this and it can be done, nay, it will be done! By offering advertising to the University and IS Services, we hope to ensure their co-operation in every project we undertake.
Closer Media Societies
- Again, we’ve always said that it’d be great to have much closer media societies, where we share resources such as interviews and equipment. It is my intention through liaison with the other managers, to put in place a system, whereby all interviews, articles, equipment and events are made known to everyone in all three societies. We have already begun talks on how to co-ordinate the societies and there are a variety of options we will consider before this semester is over so that we can make the most of the following years.
