Sean Clayton

Sean Clayton – Vice President (Services & Treasurer) Manifesto

First and foremost, hello, my name is Sean Clayton I am currently a second year law student and I have decided to run for the position of Vice President (Services & Treasurer). Some of my fondest memories are ones spent in the union in my first year. However, in recent years, your union has suffered a steady decline in profit and attendance, and I strongly believe that it is time to take action to return it to its former glory. To do that I fee that it is time to put the Student back In the Union.

Relevant Experience

Current Publicity Officer with Stirling University Rock Society & as such
I have been involved with the running of Rock Night for the last year.
Good grasp of commercial and contract law.
3 years on campus in and around the union almost every day
Lived in Geddes Court in first year.

Now that you’ve heard the personals here is my,

Manifesto.

Finances

If elected I intend to,

Clarify the accounts and budget by working closely with the accounting & finance department within SUSA, and utilizing the university’s Accounting & Finance department’s knowledge in addition to the years of experience held by the SUSA staff.

Identify and eliminate misspending so that SUSA stands a better chance of getting back in the black.

Ensure that the Executives have the money that they need, by making sure that the funding is distributed in a balanced and proportional way not just increased this should allow the executives to represent and support the groups that have elected them more easily.

Allocate the money that clubs and societies need, by putting the excess from a finely tuned budget into the general fund for clubs and societies and removing as much red tape as possible so that it can be utilized quickly and effectively.

Clarify what extra funds are available, like the Alumni projects fund, and make them more accessible so that it is easier for clubs and societies to get extra funding quickly.

Make the student body more aware of the current financial situation, with a monthly email to every student about what has been spent and what we intend to spend, in a format that is quick and easy to understand, as well as the return of the Presidential Diary in Brig.

Ensure the long-term future of SUSA, by creating, continually assessing and amending a 5-year plan to ensure there are adequate foundations for sustained growth and development.

The Robbins & Entertainment

If elected I intend to,

Work towards a much-needed facelift for the Robbins, Every year this is said and never achieved due to the cost factor. Money that was invested in the financial assessment and the shape it survey this year could be utilized next year to redecorate the facilities, at least in a basic way.

Bring the Fun Back, by implementing fresh ideas in the form of a new entertainments program well in advance of the semester. We aim to include at least one open slot per week that will financially benefit Clubs and Societies, so that there is always something new or different to experience at the union, as well as supporting some old favourites to ensure that all tastes are catered for.

Apply a new marketing approach, by allowing opportunities for those in the university’s marketing department to apply their acquired knowledge, and advertising upcoming events well in advance so that you as members of the association know what is happening when and where, helping you to see events that you might like to go to well before they happen.

Work towards greater unity between staff & management, by setting up a regular meeting once a month as an opportunity for staff to give valuable feedback, hopefully improving the efficiency, fluidity and fun of the day-to-day running of the Robbins.

Work with management towards tailoring the product range, so that the menu can be made healthier and the bars can meet demand in a bid to boost sales.

Try to ensure that bigger collaborative events are encouraged, by working more closely with clubs & societies and sports clubs so that your union has a reputation for unity and a community atmosphere.

Clubs & Societies

If elected I intend to,

Make Clubs & Societies aware of the available financial support, this stems from clubs & societies generally not being reminded or informed that there is money that they can apply for to build and run projects, such as the Alumni project fund. I intend to ensure that all of the clubs and societies know, not only what is available but also how to apply.

Bring back the personal touch; meet with every clubs and societies committees or representatives monthly to ensure that any issues are resolved and to answer any queries regarding the activities of the clubs and societies.

Push for increasing the development of SUSA online, so that it is easier to set up clubs and societies mini sites making information about your clubs and societies more accessible to encourage membership and general activities.

Attempt to remove more red tape, so that it easier to book rooms and apply to the general fund for extra financial support which will hopefully hold a much larger sum of money.

Run events in the Robbins, which will financially support clubs & societies and encourage use of the Robbins facilities.

Personal pledges

If elected I will,

Try to set out some clear election guidelines concerning online campaigning. So that future candidates will not be as confused as we were this semester with the system.

Personally put of my allocated Sabbatical salary back into SUSA, to help with the above proposals and the debt that SUSA is currently in.

So there you have it. Thank you for taking the time to read this manifesto. Thanks very much to all the people who signed my proposal forms.

If anyone has any suggestions or thoughts regarding the above manifesto, please contact us as soon as possible on the links below, or just stop me for a chat.
